Dapper Labs, a developer of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and the Flow blockchain, has attained a deal with the NFL to produce an NBA Top Shot-design marketplace for digital football antiques & collectibles. This was based on a report by Sports Business Journal, which was reported on Tuesday. Dapper Labs is the firm creator of CryptoKitties.
The site reported that the NFL and NFLPA will acquire equity in Dapper Labs and that the new American football NFT marketplace is predicted to arrive before the end of this year’s football season in early January of 2022. It was also told in the publication that the deal makes Dapper Labs the NFL Players Association’s second-largest source of digital licensing revenue behind EA Sports’ “Madden” video game franchise.
Commenting on the deal, Dapper Labs’ head of partnerships Caty Tedman said;
“When I think about the NBA vs. the NFL, the NBA really blaze a trail in a lot of ways, and they’re willing to take some risks […] if you think about the NFL, they don’t always do it first, but they try to do it best”.
“So learning from the NBA is very much in their playbook. When we think about the kind of products that we would build with other partners, we think about customizing it for those fan bases.”
Just like its basketball counterpart, the NFT marketplace will run on the Flow blockchain and is expected to be released during the current NFL regular season, which wraps on Jan. 9.
Video content will be the central aspect of Dapper’s new project, just as it has been for the company’s prized basketball product, which has traded $780 million worth of collectibles so far in 2021.
Dapper Labs secured $250 million in funding on Sept. 22 that valued the company at $7.6 billion. It comes shortly after Sorare, soccer’s leading NFT shop, added $680 million to its war chest in a funding round that valued the company at $4.3 billion.
With the NFL boasting a dedicated hard-core fan base across North America, Dapper Labs will have to move fast to take advantage of the current season. The new NFL Dapper Labs contract could become a serious growth driver for Dapper Labs as it will add a new feather to its growing NFT list. The list of sports-related NFTs includes NBA, WNBA, and LaLiga.
